Saving Social Media: An Evening with Frances Haugen

  • Canada 2020 Studio 35 Rue O'Connor Street Ottawa, ON, K1P 5M4 Canada (map)

The rise of social media has had an immeasurable effect on our everyday lives, as well as on the health of democracies around the world. Few people know this better than Frances Haugen, a former Facebook product manager turned one of the best-known whistleblowers of our time.

In 2021, Haugen leaked tens of thousands of internal documents to the Wall Street Journal and testified before the US Senate on the vital challenge of ensuring that the biggest social media companies don’t put profits before public welfare and safety. Now, she's devoted her life to advocating for a reformed social media ecosystem that protects the wellbeing, trust, and health of its users and all of society.

At this special event, Haugen will speak to the real policy solutions we need to achieve that goal, as the Government of Canada also continues to develop its legislative agenda on these priorities.

On Tuesday, October 18, join us for a reception and featured conversation with Frances Haugen and the Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy’s Director of Policy and Engagement, Supriya Dwivedi, on how we can strengthen the information environment for a healthier democracy, and build social media that brings out the best in humanity.

Thank you to Canada2020 for hosting this event. To the presenting partners, The Toronto Star and IPolitics, and to the event partners, Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, thank you for your support.
