Online Harms Act: Bill C-63

On February 26th, 2024, The Government of Canada tabled Bill C-63: The Online Harms Act. The proposed Act places a set of responsibilities on large social media platforms that together seek to minimize rather than eliminate the risk of exposure to online harms. It creates a new Digital Safety Commission empowered to audit and penalize companies and an ombudsperson to speak for Canadian citizens. It demands transparency on social media, and accountability through risk assessments and risk mitigation plans. Below are summaries of the bill, and an FAQ about what is does.
